Attorney Jenna Ellis is facing calls for her disbarment after pleading guilty to charges against her in Fulton County, Georgia.

Two watchdog groups, Stand United Democracy Center and Lawyers Defending American Democracy, drafted and signed a letter alongside former governors and state attorneys general to call for Ellis to be disbarred. The letter is addressed to Colorado Supreme Court Regulation Counsel Jessica Yates, who is in charge of attorney discipline and regulations for attorneys barred in Colorado.

According to the letter, Ellis should face punishment for the one felony count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings in Georgia, to which she pleaded guilty. Accepting a plea deal alone does not warrant punishment, as pleas are different from convictions. However, the groups seek punishment due to her admission of making false statements.

“The crime to which she pled guilty — one involving false statements in the context of her representation of former President Trump — unquestionably reflects adversely on her fitness to practice law,” the letter reads.

Among the signatories are John Farmer Jr., former New Jersey attorney general, former Attorney General and Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, and former Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman.

In March, the Colorado Supreme Court censured Ellis over the false statements. Yates was a part of the investigation that would lead to the censure at the time. It wasn’t until October that she became the third defendant in the Fulton County election subversion case to plead guilty.

“If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges. I look back on this experience with deep remorse,” Ellis said during her plea hearing between tears.

Fellow co-defendant Rudy Giuliani has already been disbarred in New York.
