In May, people may have seen a glimmer of hope at the pump. While still higher than earlier this year, the average gas price has recently dropped, offering a slight respite to consumers. Currently, the average cost of regular gas in the country is $3.59 per gallon.

Yet, despite the recent decrease, the average price of regular gas today is still more expensive than a year ago, according to AAA. In May 2023, the average price of a gallon of regular gas was $3.54.
