Confusion surrounds what U.S. Attorney David Weiss means when he said the investigation into Hunter Biden is ongoing after the president’s son agreed to plead guilty to three federal charges.

The Department of Justice announced on Tuesday that Biden had agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax crimes and one felony gun possession crime. Weiss, the attorney in charge of the case, said the investigation is ongoing.

House Republicans, including House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), who is leading an investigation into an alleged bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden, his son, and a Ukrainian energy executive, are trying to figure out what exactly the DOJ is still investigating.

“The last line and the U.S. Attorney from Delaware’s statement was this is an ongoing investigation. I don’t know exactly what that means; we’re trying to determine that,” Comer said.

Comer and House Oversight Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) viewed two more unverified FBI-generated FD-1023 documents on Tuesday related to the alleged bribery scandal. The documents were “heavily redacted” and didn’t provide much information, but they did have a mention of Hunter Biden and Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company where Hunter Biden sat on the board.

The committee will be requesting more information from the DOJ and FBI for this investigation, but Comer said he’s “concerned” the DOJ might be using the guise of an ongoing investigation to withhold documents from the committee.

“I’m concerned, but I’ll give the US Attorney the benefit of the doubt, and hopefully, he’ll be able to answer that question,” Comer said. “I think everyone in America wants to know.”

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) also believes that the DOJ is saying it is an ongoing investigation to continue to withhold documents from the House Oversight Committee.

“How can Hunter Biden plead guilty, no jail time, and the DOJ say there’s still an investigation trying to withhold information to the House?” McCarthy asked. “That’s unacceptable and will not stand.”

A spokesperson for the DOJ declined to speak about the specifics of the investigation or the charges that might arise from it.

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) said he hopes there is still an investigation into Hunter Biden and the FD-1023 because he believes there need to be more serious charges for the president’s son.

Comer said he would talk with House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) on Tuesday night about the possibility of having Weiss testify before one of their committees.
