Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki has shrugged off concerns over President Joe Biden‘s age and missteps, stating that Biden “isn’t perfect.”
Psaki’s statement comes as some Democratic supporters have asked if Biden is the best candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Recent polls have shown the president trailing behind former President Donald Trump, the expected nominee for the Republican Party. Psaki, who previously served in the Biden administration as the White House press secretary until May 2022, noted that the “handwringing” over these polls has been ongoing despite Trump making numerous statements that would likely be unpopular with independent voters.

“Guess what?” Psaki asked. “Joe Biden isn’t perfect. No candidate is, by the way. But we have to understand what the alternative is here. If elected to a second term, Donald Trump would prosecute anyone he deems an enemy, unleash troops on protesters, and essentially unravel the rule of law as we know it, and this time, he plans to align his administration with people who will actually do it. But sure, Joe Biden is three years older and occasionally trips on things.”

Psaki’s mentioned concerns come after Trump recently claimed that the Biden administration has weaponized the Justice Department and the FBI. Trump stated that he could “certainly” do the same with his political opponents if he became president again.
Some Democrats have hypothesized that another candidate could potentially run as the Democratic nominee in 2024, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) being a top contender. While some have speculated Newsom is running a shadow campaign ahead of 2024, the governor has denied that he will join the 2024 White House race.

Recent polling data on the 2024 election have given Democratic supporters concern, as a poll from CNN found that Trump polled 49% among registered voters in a hypothetical rematch between Trump and Biden, while Biden polled 45%. Another poll, this one from the New York Times-Siena College, found Trump outpacing Biden in multiple battleground states, including Arizona, Wisconsin, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Nevada.
Biden announced earlier this year that he will seek reelection, shaping up a potential rematch between him and Trump. The former president is still the expected Republican nominee, despite facing numerous opponents in the primary race and multiple legal battles.
