Kirk Cameron said the cost of freedom has been missed on many people as the United States enjoyed several decades of “liberty, stability, and blessing” but that recent “difficult times” are drawing people back.

“When you grow up with liberty and freedom, and you don’t have the hard, difficult times to contrast it with, it’s hard to appreciate it,” Cameron told the Washington Examiner. “It’s like, ‘OK, we have Memorial Day, you know. We have Independence Day, and that’s great, but sometimes, it can be remembered more for hot dogs and picnics and, you know, singing the national anthem and not understanding the cost of liberty.”

“But now that we are seeing what’s happening to our country, people are recognizing it,” he added. “I think it’s true. You don’t know what you have until it’s gone, and you don’t realize how precious the cost of liberty is until you’ve lost it, and we’re losing it.”

Cameron suggested that while “many of our liberties and values are gone, at least temporarily,” they can be won back.

In an effort to help families push back against “the storm of ‘wokeism‘ that appears to be sweeping the nation,” Cameron is amid a multicity nationwide story hour tour with publisher Brave Books as he stops at libraries to read his faith-based children’s books As You Grow and Pride Comes Before the Fall.

Cameron’s newest book, Pride Comes Before the Fall, is scheduled to be released on June 1. It follows his first faith-based children’s book, As You Grow, which details the journey of a tree’s growth and details the value of “biblical wisdom through the seasons of life.”
