A Michigan judge ruled that former President Donald Trump can remain on the state primary ballot for 2024.

Michigan Court of Claims Judge James Robert Redford ruled against lawsuits to bar Trump from the Republican primary ballot in the state in a major legal victory for the former president. The lawsuits sought to bar Trump from the ballot due to his alleged role in the Jan. 6 riot, which it claimed meant Trump “engaged in insurrection.”

Redford wrote that the cases had “the potential for running afoul” of principles against judges “becoming embroiled in recurring and highly partisan disputes,” the Detroit News reported.

If he blocked Trump from the ballot, it would deprive “the decision of whether there was a rebellion or insurrection and whether or not someone participated in it from the Congress, a body made up of elected representatives of the people.”

Trump’s campaign welcomed the decision, saying it expected it to set a good precedent for related cases.

“Trump campaign welcomes these dismissals in Michigan and anticipates the future dismissals of the other 14th Amendment cases, we are most focused on once again winning the great state of Michigan and the reelection of President Trump next year,” Steven Cheung, spokesman for Trump’s campaign, told the outlet.

The plaintiffs in two of the lawsuits expressed frustration and pledged a quick appeal.

“We are disappointed by the trial court’s decision, and we’re appealing it immediately,” Ron Fein, legal director of the nonprofit organization Free Speech For People, told the Detroit News. “The Michigan Supreme Court should reverse this badly-reasoned lower court decision.”
