Moviegoers throughout America will be able to see films at almost any theater for just $3 this weekend as the country celebrates its first-ever National Cinema Day.

More than 3,000 theaters nationwide will sell all tickets for just $3 for any movie at any showtime in any format on Saturday for the inaugural holiday, according to the Cinema Foundation. The deal offers a steep discount, as the national price for a movie ticket in 2019 was roughly $9.

“After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” said Cinema Foundation President Jackie Brenneman. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.”

The newly created national holiday marks the latest effort by the cinema industry to lure in moviegoers during a holiday weekend that typically doesn’t see many ticket sales. Major movie theaters such as AMC and Regal Cinemas will offer $3 tickets for all movies, including those offered in special formats such as 4D or IMAX.

Going even further, Cinemark Theaters announced it would be offering deals on concessions by selling drinks, food, and candy for just $3, the company said.

National Cinema Day marks the latest attempts by movie theaters to save the industry, which took a major blow during the COVID-19 pandemic as patrons were forced to stay at home and online streaming became a more convenient way to watch new movies.

Only 47% of the population in the United States and Canada went to see a movie in 2021, compared to 80% who said they watched movies through TV services or online subscriptions, according to the Motion Picture Association.
