A Navy pilot has died after crashing a fighter jet near an air station in Lemoore, California, according to the military branch.

The pilot was flying an F/A-18E Super Hornet when he crashed near the city of Trona, which is located in the Mojave Desert, around 2:30 p.m. local time Friday, according to a statement from Naval Air Forces Public Affairs.

Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake Federal Firefighters and Naval Security Forces both responded to the scene, according to the statement.

Officials did not disclose the identity of the pilot, noting they are in the process of notifying his family.

No civilians were harmed in the crash, the Navy said.
