Americans are split down the middle on whether democracy is working for the country.

According to a poll published Thursday by the Associated Press, NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 49% of respondents said democracy is not working well in the U.S., while 10% believe it is working well or extremely well, leaving 40% to report the system is doing somewhat well.

Some 1,220 adults were polled on the subject towards the end of June.

Respondents claimed that the two main political parties aren’t upholding democracy, with 47% saying the Democratic party does a bad job, and 56% saying the same of the Republican party. The majority 53% reported the views of “people like you” were not represented by policymakers, while only 12% reported the views are represented extremely well.

Meanwhile, 71% of respondents believe what voters want should be highly important during lawmaking, but only 48% believe it is truly in practice.

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers scored very similarly when it comes to their environmental policies, with roughly 50% reporting the polices do not reflect very well with respondent’s personal views. However Democratic lawmakers were off on upwards 70% of respondent’s opinions on the issues of guns and abortion. Republican lawmakers’ policies on immigration, government spending, and the economy disagreed with upwards of 70% of respondents.

The margin of error for this poll was plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
