Arizona Cardinals cornerback Jeff Gladney was killed in a car crash Monday in Dallas, according to the team.

The crash involved two vehicles and happened at around 2:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. A male and a female traveling in the same car were both found dead at the scene. The two passengers in the other vehicle were not injured. Multiple reports indicate Gladney is one of the deceased.

“We are devastated to learn of Jeff Gladney’s passing,” the Cardinals tweeted on Monday. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who are mourning this tremendous loss.”

According to authorities, a white vehicle was speeding and clipped a second vehicle from behind. The white vehicle proceeded to strike a freeway pier beam. First responders found the white vehicle overturned on Woodall Rodgers Freeway and Allen Street, in downtown Dallas, and both occupants dead. The female victim has not been identified.

Gladney, 25, was drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings out of Texas Christian University in 2020. The college defensive standout started 15 out of 16 NFL games for the Vikings in his first year in the league.

Gladney did not play in the 2021 NFL season after being charged with felony assault for an alleged incident involving his former girlfriend. He was found not guilty in March and signed a two-year $6.5 million contract with the Cardinals shortly after the trial.

According to the Cardinals website, Gladney “left an impression in his brief time with the Cardinals with his upbeat personality.” The cornerback had been “expected to play a significant role on defense” with the Cardinals in 2022, according to the team’s website.

Gladney had been taking part in the team’s voluntary training activities last week, according to the team.
