While his tune has resonated with many people in the country, Anthony said in an interview on Saturday it’s also resonating internationally. The song, Anthony explained, is about humanity and is intended for more than just one group of people.

“I mean I’ve gotten messages from people in countries that I don’t know how to pronounce,” Anthony said. “This is something that has touched people globally and there’s a reason for that.”

Amid the song’s success, fellow country singer John Rich shared his congratulations to Anthony on X, the platform once known as Twitter.

“I texted Oliver to congratulate him and he responded ‘God is good!'” Rich wrote. “Yes He is my friend, yes He is.”

Anthony, who lives in Farmville, Virginia, dropped “Rich Men North of Richmond” on YouTube earlier this month, with the song receiving more than 29 million views and well over 1 million likes. On Thursday, Anthony revealed through social media that he turned down various $8 million offers from the music industry and explained that he had written his viral song due to him dealing with depression and mental health.

“These songs have connected with millions of people on such a deep level because they’re being sung by someone feeling the words in the very moment they were being sung,” Anthony wrote. “No editing, no agent, no bulls***. Just some idiot and his guitar. The style of music that we should have never gotten away from in the first place.”
