Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) warned residents of the United States to exercise caution wherever they go for their New Year’s celebrations in light of recent global events.

Tenney’s warning comes as a New Year’s Eve celebration in New York City’s Times Square could potentially be the host to several pro-Palestinian groups, as several have called for a protest against Israel at the event. The terrorist group Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, taking many hostages, including U.S. residents, which has caused an ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

“Well, I would be very cautious everywhere you go, not just here in this country, but across the world,” Tenney said during an appearance on Newsmax on Saturday. “We have Americans held hostage across the world, and they’re high-value targets, and they’re being held by these rogue regimes like Iran. There’s terrorist groups in Afghanistan; we have hostages right now that are, as you just cited, are being potentially, hopefully negotiated for release by the country of Qatar.”

Tenney went on to state that people should also be careful wherever they go because of the lack of border security in the U.S., citing a recent story of an Iranian who made his way to New York before being sent back to Canada after illegally crossing the border. It was his second attempt at getting into the U.S., Tenney said.

The New York representative also stated that she regrets warning U.S. residents to take caution, noting that “freedom is not free” and that people need to protect themselves when the Biden administration “doesn’t seem to be protecting us.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated Friday that the New York Police Department is preparing for the possibility of thousands of protesters at the city’s year-end event.

John Hart, an assistant NYPD chief, reiterated Adams’s statement, mentioning how past protests in support of Palestinian people have drawn up to 5,000 people.
