Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) claimed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has been “completely derelict in his duty” of securing the southern border, which he described as “a national security issue.”

Jackson’s comment comes as several House Republicans are looking to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the border, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) leading the movement for the efforts. Jackson noted that while Republicans do not control the Senate nor the White House, the party does control the House of Representatives, and it should use what power it has to hold Mayorkas accountable.

“He has been completely derelict in his duty,” Jackson said. “This is a national security issue for us now. It’s not just an issue with the fentanyl and poisoning our youth, not an issue with just the overwhelming number of people coming other here, the crime, the sex trafficking, drug trafficking, all of the violence that follows that, it’s an issue now of national security.”

Jackson went on to say that Mayorkas has had “every opportunity” to address the crisis at the border but that he has opted to “bury his head in the sand” instead and is a “puppet of the Biden administration.” Going forward, he hopes that House Republicans are able to come together to start the impeachment process on Mayorkas.

The Texas representative also issued criticism towards President Joe Biden, arguing that the president could stop the border crisis “overnight if he wanted to.”

“He absolutely refuses to do anything,” Jackson said. “He’s just like Mayorkas; he is absolutely ignoring the southern border and acting like it doesn’t exist.”

Greene’s most recent attempt to impeach Mayorkas was tabled by eight Republicans, four of whom serve on the House Judiciary Committee, which she claimed showed that “they aren’t really for impeachment like they say they are.”

“We are wondering how many … dead American bodies are going to have to pile up before Republicans in Congress get serious about impeaching Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas,” Greene said. “Americans called and called; they flooded those congressmen’s offices with phone calls demanding the impeachment of Mayorkas.”
