A British student was arrested Wednesday after King Charles III and the queen consort were pelted with eggs.
A man could be observed decrying the country as being “built on the blood of slavery” while being wrestled to the ground by police, as shown in video published by the Telegraph. The reaction by the crowd was overwhelmingly negative, with loud booing and chants of “God save the king” breaking out.
The incident occurred during a royal visit to Yorkshire to attend the unveiling of a state of the king’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, according to the BBC.

“I glanced across, [saw] the police just descended on the barrier and tried to drag this chap over the top. About five eggs he’d managed to send,” eyewitness Kim Oldfield told the BBC. “Camilla sort of flinched a little bit when the booing started, but [police] quelled it really quickly. Just a shame they spoilt what was a lovely moment.”
The incident, though mostly harmless, has raised concerns about the security of the king, who is known to intermingle among adoring crowds freely. Some officials worry that a crowd member could sneak a weapon up close to the king.
However, others maintain that he should still mingle with crowds, no matter the danger.
“Those in public life are in positions of vulnerability at times and I certainly want to live in a country, and indeed in a world, where we’re not so surrounded by people minding us that we can’t meet people and chat with people,” Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell told the BBC. “That is certainly what the King and the Queen Consort want. They were out chatting with people [later in the day]. So I don’t think they’ve let it affect them.”

The University of York, where the alleged egger is a student, said it was “appalled” by his actions and would be reviewing disciplinary actions.
