At least eight people were killed and several remain missing after heavy rains swamped South Korea’s capital region on Monday and Tuesday, flooding streets and homes.

More than 18 inches of rainfall were measured in Seoul’s Dongjak district, one of the hardest-hit areas, from Monday to Tuesday evening. Some died from drowning in their own homes, while others died in landslides and other incidents, according to South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

“Nothing is more precious than life and safety. The government will thoroughly manage the heavy rain situation with the central disaster safety measures headquarters,” South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol wrote on Facebook.

On Monday night, downpours exceeded 5.5 inches an hour during a portion on Monday night, the highest rainfall measured in Seoul since 1942, according to CNN.

Flash flooding from the rainfall forced people to desert their cars on sidewalks and streets as streets turned into rivers. Over 800 residents had to evacuate their residences for shelters, according to authorities.

At least 163 people lost their homes, and over 750 buildings were flooded, according to Bloomberg.

Seoul typically records about 13.7 inches of rain in the month of August.
