At least 6,000 gallons of water were required to extinguish a Tesla on fire Saturday after the Model S “spontaneously” combusted on a California highway.

Firefighters responded to the scene after the Tesla burst into flames around 4 p.m. while it was driving east in the Rancho Cordova area on Highway 50, according to a report.

“Nothing unusual” occurred ahead of the electric vehicle’s battery compartment “spontaneously” catching fire, Metro Fire of Sacramento said in a statement posted to social media.

“Crews arrived to a Tesla Model S engulfed in flames, nothing unusual prior. 2 Fire Engines, a water tender, and a ladder truck were requested to assist,” the post read. “Crews used jacks to access the underside to extinguish and cool the battery. Thousands of gallons were used in extinguishment.”

“The vehicle battery compartment spontaneously caught fire while it was traveling freeway speeds on EB Hwy 50. The fire was extinguished with approx 6,000 gallons of water, as the battery cells continued to combust.”

No injuries were reported, officials said.

The vehicle incurred ruinous damage, and images posted by the Metro Fire of Sacramento show the electric car’s front completely burnt out.

Saturday’s incident arrives days after Tesla reported its fourth-quarter income at $3.69 billion, according to the report.
