Jeff Metcalf, the father of Austin Metcalf, said Karmelo Anthony’s family has shown zero remorse after his son was murdered.
“I know what happened was terrible, and your son made a horrible mistake,” he said on the Will Cain Show on Monday. “I was hoping for some accountability, maybe, and some remorse. Neither one was shown.”
Metcalf said Anthony’s family was absent during the sentencing and victim impact statements, where Anthony was convicted of murder for the fatal stabbing of Austin at an April track meet last year in Frisco, Texas.
“They left that poor child up there by himself,” he said. “As soon as the verdict was read, he was guilty. His family and some other advocates left the courtroom and turned in their badges.”
During the interview, Will Cain mentioned that Jeff Metcalf had told him that what was actually happening in the local community was far different from the conversation taking place in the national media, citing the popular talk show The View.
“They don’t know Hunter [Metcalf], Austin, they don’t know Carmelo, they’re looking for their 15 minutes of fame,” Metcalf said. “They’re looking to monetize the death of my son.”
Cain said Metcalf’s father had told him multiple black students at Frisco Memorial High rallied around the Metcalf family, which the media overlooked.
“There were multiple, multiple lies and mistruths that were put on social media that were spoken by even individuals who have some fame,” Metcalf said. “People had their own opinions without even seeing the facts, and that’s the part I have trouble with.”
Metcalf said the Frisco community dedicated the entire football season in honor of his son and character — not skin color — as what matters most to him.
“Unfortunately, in today’s moral decay of society, we have witnessed people believe that if they have their own voice, they scream loud enough, they’re right, and they believe perception is their own reality,” he said. “It may not be true, but in their mind, it is their own reality. For a person to not be able to objectively look at something, use common logic, and common sense to come to a determination, just based on the facts, not the color of one’s skin. That tells me a whole lot about your character.”

Metcalf said he showed up to the trial hoping to pray and prevent racial division, but was thrown out of the press conference by Dominique Alexander, an activist convicted of harming an infant in 2011. He accused Alexander and another activist of unfairly politicizing the case.
“Now we’re going to play the race card, and now we’re going to politicize this. Now we’re getting a political activist involved,” he said. “The two things I said on one of the first interviews I ever did were, ‘Please don’t make this about race,’ and ‘Please don’t politicize it,’ but they chose to do both.”
