Congressional Democrats are pushing FBI Director Kash Patel for answers over his use of taxpayer-funded resources after a private letter from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) raised many of their same concerns about the director’s spending patterns.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), the top Democrats on the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, disclosed Thursday that Grassley sent the Trump administration’s FBI director a private letter in May seeking detailed records about his use of FBI aircraft and the bureau’s purchase of armored BMW vehicles for the director’s transportation.
The previously undisclosed letter, dated May 8, described the Republican chairman requesting a list of every FBI aircraft flight Patel had taken, including departure and destination locations, the cost of each trip, and whether Patel reimbursed the government for any personal travel as required by law, according to a copy of the letter reviewed by MS Now.
Grassley, who often lauds the director for his work under President Donald Trump‘s administration, reportedly asked Patel to explain why the FBI purchased BMW vehicles instead of its long-standing practice of using Chevrolet Suburbans, requesting a full accounting of the financial impact of the change.
“For decades, regardless of which political party is in the White House, I have worked to ensure that taxpayer dollars are protected from waste, fraud, and abuse,” Grassley wrote, noting he has subjected FBI directors under both Republican and Democratic administrations to similar oversight. The Washington Examiner made multiple requests to Grassley’s office to obtain a copy of the letter.
Raskin and Durbin said Grassley’s inquiries closely mirror concerns Democrats have been raising for months as whistleblowers provided information about Patel’s travel and spending practices. Just weeks after Grassley’s letter, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) asked Patel for an extensive record of his travels.

“We appreciate Chairman Grassley raising these concerns, which mirror those raised repeatedly by House and Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats,” the lawmakers wrote in a separate letter to Patel on Wednesday.
The Democrats accused Patel of repeatedly seeking “special perks” while traveling on official business, citing reports that he requested a taxpayer-funded helicopter tour in East Asia, participated in jet skiing and a VIP snorkeling excursion around the sunken USS Arizona in Hawaii, and used an FBI aircraft to attend the Winter Olympics in Milan, where he celebrated with the U.S. men’s hockey team after its gold medal victory.
According to the lawmakers, a whistleblower described a pattern of behavior by Patel to engage in luxuries when available, recalling the director saying, “If you have golf, hockey, fishing, or hunting and beautiful sights, you’re going to see a lot of me.”
Despite Democrats’ complaints, some trips taken by the director have been long planned, such as the trip to Milan, which he described as a needed venture to ensure the United States is prepared for the security needed ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Meanwhile, Patel has been busy in recent weeks coordinating with officials running the FIFA World Cup, touting on X Thursday the “over 4,500 personnel supporting the games — the most extensive level of support the FBI has provided a global sporting event in its history.”
Patel and his spokesman Ben Williamson have repeatedly denied any improper use of government resources and have said that Patel reimburses the government for any personal travel aboard FBI aircraft at the equivalent commercial airfare rate.
“Government agencies, including the FBI, routinely evaluate, replace and update vehicle fleets based on usage, security needs or budgetary decisions,” Williamson said in December, defending the bureau’s purchase of new BMWs.

Notably, Democrats lack subpoena power as the minority party in both the House and Senate chambers. It would take a reversal of those current Republican majorities in order to give Democrats the enforcement power they need to compel Patel’s responses, which could happen after November’s midterm elections.
Neither Williamson nor Grassley’s office immediately responded to repeated requests for comment on the Democrats’ latest letter.
