Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) told the parents of children murdered by illegal immigrants that Congress has other things to do.
“Unfortunately, this hearing is the fourth time in this committee that we’ve had a hearing on sanctuary cities, the fourth time … There’s many other things that we could be doing other than this,” Jayapal said during a House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity and Security hearing on Tuesday.
During the hearing, Jessica Gorman, mother of Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old Loyola University student who was fatally shot by an illegal immigrant, criticized Democratic members of Congress, saying, “I don’t understand why it’s only the Republican side that cares about our American children!”
The hearing was focused on sanctuary cities and the perspectives of victims, examining how sanctuary policies, specifically in Illinois and California, endanger communities by prioritizing the interests of criminal aliens ahead of the interests of Americans.
Jayapal gave her opening remarks, saying, “Let me start by offering my deepest condolences to you, Mrs. Gorman, and to you, Mr. Abraham, for the loss of your children. As a parent myself, I can think of no greater loss. And I appreciate you being here to share their stories and their lives with us.”
As Jayapal delivered her opening remarks, offering condolences to the victims, she also criticized the committee for holding its fourth hearing, “I would have loved to have had some hearings on the unconstitutionality of the president’s executive order on eliminating birthright citizenship,” she said.
Gorman’s mother emphasized the dismissive response and expressed the depth of her grief, saying, “You don’t feel my pain. Because the next words out of your mouth were, ‘but.’” There’s no ‘but’ when your child is in a coffin!”
FOR THE LEFT, SOME LIVES ARE APPARENTLY MORE VALUABLE THAN OTHERS
While Jayapal suggested that there were more pressing issues focusing on the effects of Immigration Customs and Enforcement, Gorman’s mother continued to question why Democrats were prioritizing illegal immigrants over American citizens.
“I’m going to buy Congress the bench. And they can come and sit and hold my hand and look me in the eye and explain to me why illegal immigrants are more important than my daughter. I really want to know what because I don’t understand,” she said.
