Newly minted Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan would like you to focus not on who he’s campaigned with, but “who I’m campaigning to.”
The problem is that, when you factor in who he’s campaigning with, he’s campaigning to people who he thinks “deserved 9/11” and to survivors of communism who came to America for a better and freer life, only to have one of El-Sayed’s surrogates tell them to “suck my d***, old lady.”
The hard-left El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health official and new darling of the progressives, eked out a win in Tuesday’s primary against moderate U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, 48.5 percent to 47.5 percent.
Any win is a good win, or so they tell you. However, there’s the fact that this win is just a prelude to the whole general election in a swing state, where El-Sayed will face not just Democrats but the entire electorate, as well as sane and competent competition in the form of the Republican nominee, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers.
There’s also the fact that polls had El-Sayed up bigly, usually by double digits and sometimes by as much as 19 points, before the Tuesday primary.
And then there’s the matter of Hasan Piker.
Piker, a radical Islamist Twitch streamer known for hating America, cheering on violence — including assassination attempts against President Donald Trump — and allegedly abusing his own dog, campaigned with El-Sayed and was one of his biggest backers.

If it weren’t for him, El-Sayed probably wouldn’t have gotten this far. But then again, if it weren’t for him, El-Sayed also wouldn’t have to answer a lot of questions about the nature of their association.
Because of Piker, El-Sayed has 99 problems, and a female dog is just one of them.
On Sunday, we got a preview of how El-Sayed plans to deal with this. Appearing on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” host Kristen Welker noted that “you’ve faced scrutiny for campaigning with socialist streamer Hasan Piker” and asked if he planned to continue campaigning with a man “who has made a series of inflammatory comments.”
“Look, I’m less concerned now with who I’m campaigning with and a lot more concerned about who I’m campaigning to. We’ve got a lot of work to do to continue to build the coalition that’s going to beat Mike Rogers,” El-Sayed responded.
Okay, but would he be on the campaign trail with El-Sayed?
“Like I said, I’m a lot more focused on who I’m campaigning to. So I think we have this notion sometimes on shows like this that we cannot or should not talk to certain groups of people,” he reiterated.
“And I’ll tell you that the three million people who listen to Hasan are people I want to make sure understand that there’s a pathway into our politics around getting money out of politics so we can get money back in pockets and pass Medicare for All. And so I’m going to continue to have the conversations with those folks who we desperately need to reach out.”

Oh, and just in case you forgot what 9/11 was, Piker decided to frame the planes hitting the World Trade Center on his back wall so that you remember that almost 3,000 people died fiery, violent deaths that day, and he’s pretty darned happy about it:

So, Mr. El-Sayed, are you campaigning to the people in Michigan who lost people in the most horrific way possible on that day? Are you going to be doing it with a guy who thinks bodies burned and mutilated beyond identification and buried in the rubble of two skyscrapers simply for being American is lulzy?
Are you going to be telling Michiganders that this is the kind of thing they can expect going forward? After all, you’re “campaigning to” them with this message, and that’s what you’re concerned with.
But let’s get a little more specific. As you probably know, Mr. El-Sayed, the Detroit area has a large concentration of Hmong refugees who fled communism and know the horrors of it. You’ll have to campaign to them, too. And here’s Mr. Piker telling one of those refugees of communist Vietnam, and I quote: “F*** you, old lady. Shut the f*** up, you stupid f***ing idiotic old lady… Suck my d***, old lady. Godd*** dude. Yo, f*** this refugee.”

What are you going to be telling her, Mr. El-Sayed? “Yes, I want to implement tons of the policies that you escaped from, but it’ll be better this time. Also, Hasan wanted me to let you know that the offer to perform unspeakable sexual acts upon him remains open.”
I think that’s one voter who’s not going to be quite so concerned about the fact that you’re apparently now “a lot more focused on who I’m campaigning to.” Call it a hunch.
But therein lies the problem with that line, slick as it may sound: Faustian bargains generally end like “Faust.” You either repent or pay the price.
Eliding over it by saying you’re just “campaigning to” people ignores the fact that you’re campaigning with someone whose message to them is… well, see above. It’s gross, it’s carnal, it’s evil. Smiling through it doesn’t make it work.
