SSI payments are typically issued on the first day of each month, or on the last business day of the prior month if the first day falls on a federal holiday or weekend. The program supports people with limited income who are blind, age 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability.

The amount beneficiaries receive varies based on several factors, including the number of people filing and the individual’s income. Typically, the more income the filer has, whether earned or unearned, the lower their payments would be. Individual filers can receive up to $994, couples filing jointly can receive $1,491, and those providing essential care to SSI recipients can receive up to $498.
Filers must meet certain requirements and prerequisites for receiving SSI payments. Recipients must also be U.S. citizens or noncitizens in one of the alien classifications granted by the Department of Homeland Security. Retirees typically receive lower payments because they also receive Social Security benefits.

Recipients must also live in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands, and must not be absent from the United States for a full calendar month or 30 consecutive days. SSI is not available in American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
