Former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan stated Sunday that No Labels would “very likely” announce a third-party campaign in the 2024 presidential election in the event former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden are the nominees for their respective parties.

Hogan’s statement comes as many people in the United States have grown frustrated with both the Republican and Democratic parties. With people discontent with options A and B in presidential elections, “we have an obligation to give them C, I mean, for the good of the country,” the co-chairman of the No Labels party said during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union.

“It’s an overwhelming majority of people who are completely fed up with politics,” Hogan said. “They think Washington is broken. And so, even though this normally is not something that we consider and talk about seriously because it hasn’t happened in the past, this is something that could happen.”

Hogan has been speculated by many to be the front-runner for a third-party bid for president, as he has been vocal against his refusal to support Trump’s candidacy in the Republican primary. When asked about his political aspirations last month, Hogan said he was “focused on getting the Republican Party on track and trying to nominate a good Republican.” The former governor toyed with running on the Republican ticket but decided in March that he “didn’t want to have a pileup of a bunch of people fighting,”

Some have expressed concern that a third-party candidate would take votes away from Biden and pave the way to a second term for Trump, with polling from last month showing that if there were no third-party candidate in the 2024 election, Biden would either barely be ahead of Trump or be tied with him. On the other hand, Trump would take the lead or be tied with Biden if a third-party candidate did run, according to ABC News.

Former GOP New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stated last month he has no plans to join the No Labels third-party movement, calling it a “fool’s errand.”

“I’m in this to get elected president of the United States, and there are only two people who will get elected president of the United States: the Republican nominee for president and the Democratic nominee for president,” said Christie.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who has been considering leaving the Democratic Party and becoming an independent, has commended No Label’s mission for pushing to give voters “options” besides the two major parties. Some have speculated that Manchin could be a third-party presidential candidate in 2024.
