Uvalde city officials will not release any city records or body camera footage until investigations into the shooting at Robb Elementary School and the subsequent response are complete, according to guidance issued by the Uvalde County District Attorney’s Office.

The city won’t release the information to the public or to the media while the investigation is active because the materials are still being reviewed by officials. Once reviews of the incident and the police response are finished, the city will evaluate which records to release, officials said.

“I appreciate your interest in telling the story of what happened,” Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin said in a statement. “I want answers and our families deserve answers, and we trust the answers will come.”

Investigations into the shooting are being carried out by state and federal investigators, as well as a critical incident review from the Justice Department. Inquiries will seek to gain information after details emerged of communication breakdowns and inadequate police practices that may have caused unnecessary deaths and delayed medical treatment during the mass shooting, according to experts.

Nineteen children and two teachers were killed in the attack, and several more were wounded. The gunman has been identified as an 18-year-old who officials say legally purchased two AR-style rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. A member of the elite Border Patrol Tactical Unit has been credited with killing the shooter.

Information presented by Texas officials has changed drastically over the previous weeks as investigators try to determine a motive and timeline for the shooting. Uvalde is a town of roughly 16,000 people situated between San Antonio and Del Rio, just dozens of miles away from the U.S.-Mexico border.
